Victoria Point Test System explained: VPT scores, priority occupations and your next steps
Understand Victoria’s VPT, its seven scoring factors, priority occupations and how it differs from federal points. Explore 190 and 491 nomination planning.

In brief
- Victoria uses the VPT to rank Registrations of Interest for 190 and 491 nomination; it is separate from federal skilled-migration points.
- Priority occupations provide selection context, not a separate points bonus or a guaranteed invitation.
- At the 18 October 2026 source check, Victoria said the 2026–27 program would open soon. Published tables do not establish that applications are open.
The Victorian Government’s page checked on 18 October 2026 says the 2026–27 program will open soon, with eligibility details to follow. Check the current official position before acting.
What is the Victoria Point Test System?
The Victoria Point Test System, or VPT, is Victoria’s weighted ranking system for Registrations of Interest (ROIs) in its skilled visa nomination program. It supports selection for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).
An EOI in SkillSelect, a Victorian ROI, an invitation to apply for nomination, nomination approval and a visa application are different steps. Calculating a VPT total does not complete any of them.
Federal points concern the Australian Government’s skilled-visa requirements. VPT points concern Victorian selection. Do not add the two totals together or add federal nomination points to the VPT.
The seven factors behind a VPT total
Victoria’s published table uses seven weighted factors. The relevant definitions and supporting evidence matter as much as the numbers.
- Age — use the Victorian age table, not the federal age-points bands.
- English language — the published VPT categories are Competent, Proficient and Superior.
- Experience — use relevant experience in the nominated occupation and the published VPT brackets.
- Education — apply the relevant qualification category, subject to recognition and the nomination requirements.
- Occupation skill level — check the nominated occupation’s ANZSCO skill level separately from whether it appears on a visa occupation list.
- Partner skills — all published conditions must be satisfied; having a skilled partner alone is insufficient.
- Victorian skilled-employment earnings — confirm which earnings can be counted and the applicable published bracket.
What does a priority occupation mean?
Victoria describes two selection routes: the most-competitive stream across eligible occupations and selection within priority industries. Its published 2026–27 priority list covers specified occupations in Healthcare, Social assistance, Education and Construction.
Membership depends on the listed occupation, not simply working in a broadly related industry. Some entries have additional conditions. For Early Childhood Education, the published priority condition requires one or more years of relevant experience and Proficient or Superior English.
Priority status adds no separate VPT points and does not guarantee an invitation. An occupation absent from the priority list is not automatically ineligible: eligible applicants may still be considered in the most-competitive stream.
The partner-skills factor is a separate check. The published 50-point category requires a 10-point partner-skills claim in the EOI, inclusion of the partner in the state-nominated visa application and a partner occupation on the current priority list. The main applicant’s priority match does not satisfy these partner conditions.
Does a high VPT score guarantee an invitation?
No. Victoria states that the VPT has no fixed pass mark. Competitiveness depends on the other ROIs in the pool at the time and the limited nomination places available.
A calculator cannot see Victoria’s live ROI pool or establish your official rank. A past outcome for another applicant is not a promise of the same outcome for you.
Victoria also states that personal circumstances such as an approaching birthday or visa expiry do not secure priority. Plan lawful status and deadlines separately from hoped-for invitation timing.
Two scoring boundaries that need care
The experience table awards 80 points for six to seven years. Our calculator uses “8 years or more — 100 points” as iExcel’s interpretation. The official table currently says “More than 8 years”; the inclusive eight-year band is our interpretation, not confirmed government wording.
The earnings table checked starts at $80,000. Do not invent a lower bracket or assume an unverified earnings amount qualifies. An unresolved factor means the displayed subtotal is not a fully established total.
These are source limitations, not conclusions that an applicant is ineligible. They need clarification alongside the current nomination criteria and the applicant’s evidence.
Turn a score into a planning discussion
A useful review checks the occupation, evidence behind each claim, the current nomination rules and the practical implications of choosing 190 or regional 491. It also considers alternatives rather than relying on one invitation stream.
Use the iExcel VPT tool for a private self-assessed estimate, including an occupation-priority indicator. It is not an ROI submission, evidence verification or an invitation forecast.
