A letter from the Department? Read it carefully, then act early.
Plain-language guidance on Department requests, concerns and proposed decisions. Choose the topic that matches your letter, then contact us.
Office hours Monday–Friday, 9 am–5 pm. Not a 24/7 service. To book, choose a time first, then complete the visitor registration form.
Check the notice and response deadline first.
A Department concern is not necessarily a final refusal or cancellation. Identify the exact notice, legal basis and required response before acting.
- Deadlines. Response periods depend on the notice, notification rules and applicable law. Verify the deadline and submission method promptly. Any extension must be available under the process and confirmed; do not assume that requesting one pauses the deadline.
- Status. A Department notice, a response or a waiver request does not itself extend a visa, grant a bridging visa or create work or travel rights. Check the visa actually in effect and its conditions separately.
- Booking. Booking, contacting iExcel or completing visitor registration does not submit a response to the Department, pause a response deadline or extend your visa.
- Documents. If available, the notice and decision-related correspondence, the response deadline, visa details and relevant application records can help. Do not delay first contact while collecting a complete file; documents are not a prerequisite for booking.
Other complex matters we can discuss
- Section 56 — Requests for information
- Requests for further documents or information are distinct from section 57 invitations to comment on certain adverse information. Follow the actual request and submission instructions. Official information (opens in a new tab)
- Schedule 3 requirements
- Certain onshore applications can involve additional criteria where the applicant does not hold a substantive visa. Applicability and any waiver considerations depend on the subclass, criteria and circumstances; no universal waiver is available. Official information (opens in a new tab)
- No Further Stay conditions
- Conditions such as 8503, 8534 and 8535 can restrict further applications in Australia. Waiver criteria differ and a request does not remove the condition or extend the visa. Home Affairs states the ART cannot review its decision on this waiver. Do not become unlawful while waiting for a waiver decision. Official information (opens in a new tab)
- Previous refusals and immigration history
- Earlier applications, refusals, cancellations and current status can affect eligibility and further onshore applications. A fresh application is not automatically available. If a decision has already been made, assess review rights and deadlines separately. Official information (opens in a new tab)

Complex visa matter questions
Not necessarily. Identify whether it is a request, a proposed decision, an invitation to comment or an actual decision. The process and options differ.
These pages focus on Department concerns, visa criteria and responses. ART merits review generally concerns an eligible decision already made. A Department response is not an ART application, and review rights are not automatic.
A registered migration agent can assist with migration advice and relevant administrative submissions within their authorised scope. Court or serious criminal, detention or removal issues may require an Australian legal practitioner.
Availability depends on the process. Check the notice and law, request any permitted extension promptly and obtain confirmation. Do not assume the request pauses the original deadline.

No. Booking does not submit a Department response or pause a deadline. A waiver request does not itself extend a visa or grant a bridging visa; current status must be assessed separately.
