Health Requirements & Waivers

A health concern does not automatically mean refusal. Understand the medical assessment, whether the visa allows a waiver and what information the Department has requested.

Office hours Monday–Friday, 9 am–5 pm. Not a 24/7 service. To book, choose a time first, then complete the visitor registration form.

Check the notice and response deadline first.

A Department concern is not necessarily a final refusal or cancellation. Identify the exact notice, legal basis and required response before acting.

  • Deadlines. Response periods depend on the notice, notification rules and applicable law. Verify the deadline and submission method promptly. Any extension must be available under the process and confirmed; do not assume that requesting one pauses the deadline.
  • Status. A Department notice, a response or a waiver request does not itself extend a visa, grant a bridging visa or create work or travel rights. Check the visa actually in effect and its conditions separately.
  • Booking. Booking, contacting iExcel or completing visitor registration does not submit a response to the Department, pause a response deadline or extend your visa.
  • Documents. If available, the notice and decision-related correspondence, the response deadline, visa details and relevant application records can help. Do not delay first contact while collecting a complete file; documents are not a prerequisite for booking.

Important cautions

  • A health waiver is available only for certain visas and waivable health requirements. It is not an automatic exemption.
  • Private health insurance or an intention to pay medical costs does not automatically satisfy the health requirement or secure a waiver.
  • Do not submit a generic waiver request without checking the actual medical assessment, visa criterion and Department process.
  • An explanation, correction or supporting submission does not guarantee that a concern will be resolved, a waiver exercised or a visa granted. Outcomes depend on the facts and applicable law.

What this page covers

Assess the relevant visa health criterion and the actual Department or Medical Officer correspondence. Do not assume every medical condition fails the requirement or every failure can be waived.

Important distinctions

Medical assessment is not the waiver decision
The Medical Officer of the Commonwealth (MOC) gives the relevant medical assessment or opinion. The Department separately considers a waiver where the visa and circumstances permit one.
A waiver is not a separate visa
Home Affairs says you do not need to make a separate health waiver application. If the health requirement is not met and a waiver is available, the processing officer contacts you for further information and submissions. Other visa eligibility criteria must first be met.
Some health requirements cannot be waived
Home Affairs states that a health waiver cannot be exercised for active tuberculosis or a condition posing a danger to the Australian community or a threat to public health. Do not confuse this with a blanket finding about all medical conditions.

How the process works

  1. Review the health criterion, medical correspondence and any response request.
  2. Distinguish questions about the medical assessment from the availability of a waiver.
  3. Identify relevant medical, support and personal evidence for the applicable process.
  4. Prepare requested information and waiver submissions where available, within the required timeframe.
  5. Review the Department outcome and any remaining requirements or available next steps.

Documents that may help (optional at first contact)

  • Relevant MOC or Department correspondence and medical assessment material, if available.
  • Treating or specialist reports addressing the issues raised, where relevant.
  • Evidence of treatment, support arrangements and relevant personal or family circumstances.
  • Information responsive to the Department’s waiver submission request. Medical professionals provide medical opinions; migration submissions do not replace clinical advice.

How we help

  • Review the visa health concern and whether a waiver is available under the relevant criteria.
  • Identify information relevant to the Department’s request and supporting medical or other records.
  • Prepare migration submissions where permitted, with realistic advice about the limits and risks.
