Subclass 407 · Training

Training Visa (subclass 407)

A temporary visa for genuine, structured occupational training—not ordinary ongoing employment. The sponsor, training category and approved program must fit the applicant’s circumstances.

Outcome
Temporary
Duration
Up to 2 years
Age
Usually 18 or older when decided; limited exceptions apply
Regional
No general regional requirement; approved training locations matter

Approvals come first

  • Sponsorship and nomination must be approved before the visa application is lodged. An Australian Commonwealth Government agency does not need to nominate, but must be an approved sponsor and provide the required invitation.
  • Subclass 407 is for training, not ordinary employment or filling workforce shortages. Work activities must fit the approved program and visa conditions.
  • There is no direct permanent residence pathway. Another visa requires a separate eligibility assessment and valid application.
  • The sponsorship and nomination approval steps may take time. Do not assume a pending sponsorship or nomination provides lawful immigration status or a bridging visa.

Ordinary employment vs training. Subclasses 482, 186 and 494 are for sponsored work in a nominated occupation. The 407 is for occupational training or professional development under an approved program; it is not a work visa for filling a vacancy, has its own eligibility and does not provide a direct permanent residence pathway. Training categories

Training required for registration

Workplace-based training required to obtain occupational registration, membership or licensing in Australia or the home country, subject to the category’s requirements.

Training to improve skills

Structured workplace-based training in an eligible occupation. Generally requires recent relevant employment or study equivalent to at least 12 months full-time in the 24 months before nomination.

Training for capacity building overseas

Category-specific programs connected with overseas qualifications, government support or professional development. Each has distinct requirements; not every workplace placement qualifies.

Trainee requirements

  • Have an approved temporary activities sponsor and an approved nomination before visa lodgement, unless the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency; that agency must be approved and provide the required invitation.
  • Participate in genuine structured training that satisfies the relevant occupational training category.
  • Usually be at least 18 when the application is decided, subject to limited exceptions.
  • Meet applicable English requirements, have adequate financial support and maintain appropriate health insurance.
  • Meet health, character and other applicable visa requirements; eligible accompanying family members are assessed separately.

Sponsor requirements

  • Obtain approval as a temporary activities sponsor.
  • Prepare a category-specific training nomination identifying the purpose, structure, duration, locations and intended skills development.
  • Have the nomination approved before visa lodgement, unless the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, for which the invitation arrangements apply.
  • Provide a genuine training program rather than use the visa to fill an ordinary ongoing job.
  • Meet the relevant sponsorship and workplace obligations.

What this visa allows

  • Undertake the approved occupational training to develop relevant skills.
  • Stay for up to two years, depending on the approved program and visa decision.
  • Include eligible family members, subject to their own requirements.
  • Travel while the visa remains valid and comply with its conditions.

How the process works

  1. Assess the applicant’s background and select a genuine eligible training category.
  2. Arrange approval of the organisation as a temporary activities sponsor.
  3. Prepare the structured training nomination and obtain approval before visa lodgement. For an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, confirm approved sponsorship and the required invitation instead.
  4. After the necessary approvals, confirm visa eligibility and lodge the visa application with financial, insurance, English and other required evidence.
  5. Undertake only the approved activities after grant, maintain compliance and review any proposed sponsor or program changes before proceeding.

How we actually help

  • Assess the proposed training category against the applicant’s employment or study background.
  • Prepare temporary activities sponsorship and training nomination applications and review the structured program evidence.
  • Check approval sequencing and prepare the visa application without treating training as an automatic skilled work or permanent residence pathway.

Related pathway

A holder may later qualify for another skilled or employer-sponsored visa only if they independently meet its criteria and can make a valid application. Holding subclass 407 does not itself establish eligibility for subclass 482 or permanent residence.
