What this visa allows

  • Stay in Australia for five years from grant.
  • Live, work and study in designated regional areas, subject to visa conditions.
  • Include eligible members of your family unit.
  • Consider a separate subclass 191 permanent residence application after meeting the relevant holding period and other criteria.

Requirements at a glance

  • Be under 45 when invited to apply; meeting this age requirement when submitting an EOI is not enough.
  • Nominate an eligible occupation and meet the relevant suitable skills assessment requirements, including validity and timing rules.
  • Have at least Competent English at invitation, with evidence that meets the current requirements.
  • Meet the minimum 65-point total, including the relevant 15 nomination or sponsorship points, and receive an invitation.
  • For state nomination, meet the jurisdiction’s criteria. For family sponsorship, the sponsor must meet the relationship, residence and immigration-status requirements.
  • Meet health, character and other applicable visa criteria, including any requirements affecting accompanying family members.

Check the official designated regional postcodes. Classifications and visa conditions—not a city name alone—determine the relevant location requirements.

Important limitations

  • This is not permanent residence. A later subclass 191 application requires its own eligibility assessment and decision.
  • Holders must comply with designated regional residence, work and study conditions. Check postcodes, not only city names, and any separate nomination commitments.
  • 15 nomination or sponsorship points count towards the minimum total; they do not guarantee an invitation.
  • An Expression of Interest is not a visa application. It does not provide a bridging visa or lawful immigration status.
  • Restrictions may affect applications for other visas during the first three years. Obtain advice before changing pathways.

How the process works

  1. Assess occupation, points and the skills assessment and English evidence required.
  2. Choose an eligible state nomination or family sponsorship route and check its distinct requirements.
  3. Submit an accurate EOI and complete any required nomination process.
  4. If invited, review the claims and lodge the visa application within 60 days.
  5. After grant, comply with regional conditions, keep evidence and plan any future subclass 191 application.

How we actually help

  • Assess the difference between family sponsorship and state nomination for your circumstances.
  • Check intended regional postcodes and the evidence supporting your EOI.
  • Prepare nomination or sponsorship and visa documentation, and explain the later 191 evidence requirements.

Related pathway

Eligible 491 holders may later apply for subclass 191 under the Regional Provisional stream after holding an eligible visa for at least three years and meeting compliance, documentation and other criteria. Permanent residence is not automatic.
